1. Not removing our
idols
Judges 2:1-3
“1The angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bokim and
said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land I swore to give
to your ancestors. I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you, 2 and you
shall not make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall break
down their altars.’ Yet you have disobeyed me. Why have you done this? 3 And I
have also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; they will become traps
for you, and their gods will become snares to you.’””
- The context of this verse begins
in chapter 1: 27, actually, in order
to understand it, we must also consider Numbers 33: 50-56for God has given them
instructions to drive them out from when they were yet in the wilderness.
- Now, when we do not remove in our
lives the idols or the things that replace God in our hearts, and the things
that will tempt us to sin again, we will surely find it difficult to grow. In
fact. It is possible that we will go back to our old sinful habits because of
them.
2. Tolerating other people’s
sin because of not correcting them.
1 Samuel 2:29-30
“29 Why do you scorn my sacrifice and offering that I
prescribed for my dwelling? Why do you honor your sons more than me by
fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people
Israel?’
30 “Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I
promised that members of your family would minister before me forever.’ But now
the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but
those who despise me will be disdained.”
- The context of this verse begins
from chapter 2: 12
- When we do not correct other
people, though we know the sin they are doing, it is the same as tolerating
them.
- How can we correct other people?
We can learn from
what Samuel did in 1 Samuel 12: 2-4,
23-25(context is from verse 1)
a) Sharing the Word of God.
b) Not doing what they do (not
allowing self to be influenced)
c) By showing them the right kind
of life.
d) Do not argue with them.
e) Pray for them.
3. We must not let
the Holy Spirit depart from us. We need to overcome the flesh.
- When Saul received the Holy
Spirit in 1 Samuel 10: 1-9 we will
read that God changed his heart
- However, in 1 Samuel 13: 5-14 and chapter
15 we will see that Saul lost the Holy Spirit because he did not overcome his
flesh. He did not obey the Lord because he does not have enough faith. He chose
to sin just to please his men.
- Because Saul does not give
importance to the Holy Spirit, the Lord removed the Holy Spirit from him and
has given it to David. The Lord is looking unto the heart of the person. (1 Samuel 16:6-7)
Conclusion:
Christians will not grow in our
faith and in our relationship with God if we do not overcome our flesh and do
not remove the idols in our lives. We must not quench the Holy Spirit because without
the Holy Spirit we will not be qualified to eternal life.
